If you’re an introvert, how old were you when you figured it out?
I was in my mid-twenties—working from home with two little boys always within arm’s reach of me—when I connected the dots.
There was a reason I sometimes needed to check out of my social life? There was a reason I felt so worn down by the constant questions and “watch me, Mom!” from my toddler? There was a reason I spent a lot of time at home with my kids (because that’s how I like it) and still felt utterly depleted at the end of each day?
Cue me breathing a long, dramatic sigh of relief (and gleefully canceling even more of the activities on my calendar!).
I have a theory that the relief I felt at learning about my introversion is universal—especially if you’re a parent. The nonstop nature and continuous noise of parenting is extra… tricky for people who need quiet and space in order to recharge.

I recently asked our community to share the first tip you’d give to a parent who has just discovered the connection between her introversion and her struggles as a parent. No surprise—y’all delivered! So I whipped up a PDF: 12 tips for introverted parents, from introverted parents.
I love that the advice is from real, everyday women who have connected the dots just like you have. Their tips are varied and specific, and in my (obviously biased) opinion totally worth reading. 😉
Just enter your info below to have the PDF sent right to your inbox!

Ditto on the comments above; i’m a subscriber and would love to read this, even though I’m no longer a parent of “littles.”
In answer to Erica’s question, I discovered my introversion when my children were small, when they made constant demands for my time, undivided attention, and love, while I craved solitude and quiet in equal constancy.
I tried many things to balance these divergent needs, with varying amounts of success. Cultivating a deep spiritual practice and making weekend-long retreats was by far my best method, but day-to-day balance remained a struggle and always seemed just out of reach. Some days I felt that I had made a huge mistake in having children; that I wasn’t cut out for it. Other days, I felt overwhelmed with the love I felt for my family and knew that I had chosen well. Either way, the choice was made and my commitment was full. I arose early each morning for quiet time, and meditation on an unshakeable inner peace was helpful. In daily life, on my best days, I found that intentionally “letting go” and going with the flow brought some amount of relief on a consistent basis.
Fast forward to today… my daughter is in her 30’s and has given me two precious and amazing granddaughters. I still absolutely need solitude and quiet, but now with no littles underfoot in our home, it’s easier for me to find, and I have found the balance I need in quiet daily routine, keeping a peaceful and uncluttered home, deep spiritual practice, and careful moderation of social time, outside commitments, and meaningless “busyness.”

Wow, Missy. I was SO inspired by your comment. I can relate on so many levels. I especially loved this vulnerable and oh-so-relatable admission: “Some days I felt that I had made a huge mistake in having children; that I wasn’t cut out for it. Other days, I felt overwhelmed with the love I felt for my family and knew that I had chosen well.” Thank you for sharing!

I was in my late teens when I took a Myers Briggs and first heard of introverts/extroverts. It made SO MUCH SENSE and really was a life changing thing for me to realize that there wasn’t anything wrong with me, I was just an introvert! Looking forward to reading the tips, please send them my way! Thanks!
