Last week I talked about how pinterest has helped me pin down my personal style as it pertains to the home. This week, fashion! To my style pins, hop over here.
When I look at pictures of myself in high school (even college), I’ll think, “WHAT? I wore YELLOW??”
Back then, I tried anything and everything. It’s how you find out what colors and styles best suit your complexion and figure. Now that I’m in my late twenties, I have a better idea of what actually looks good on me, and let me tell you, it’s not pale yellow. 🙂
Being aware of what flatters you makes shopping so much more efficient. (And when you’re handing goldfish to kids in strollers, efficiency is king.) No longer do I need to try on every color in the store; I know I look best in jewel tones. Deep pinks, plums. Emerald and navy. I have a light complexion and pale blue/green eyes, so I find that the contrast of deeper shades helps livens me up. They add another dimension, so to speak.
If I am going to venture beyond my tried-and-true colors, I try to do it with bottoms or accessories—not anything that is right next to my face, washing me out. (Like the red pants, below.)
This one is obviously the most realistic for my current stage of life, which involves lots of outings to the park, the occasional diaper blow-out, and plenty of time spent rockin’ out to the pandora toddler station.
This is probably my favorite. Pairing brown and black makes me feel so daring, since I’m defying all the matching rules I learned as an early teen. 🙂
*Disclaimer #1: If you follow any of these outfits through to Polyvore and look at the price tags of the individual pieces, there is a huge range. I didn’t take the time to shop around on Polyvore for the most affordable option. I was just going for a look.
*Disclaimer #2: I am in no way saying I always look put together in real life. I try! But usually getting everyone else dressed comes first. 🙂 (And I don’t fit my pre-baby wardrobe yet.)
Looks to me like my wardrobe style isn’t too different from my decorating style. Clean and classic. Neutral staples with dashes of color and plenty of contrast. Easy to mix-and-match.
I’d love to hear about your style! How would you describe it? Do you have a good idea of what flatters you? And how has your style changed over the years?

Pinterest has been super helpful for me to determine my style. I like very classic pieces, with a hint of romance. I’m a big fan of black and white with pops of royal blue, mint, coral, etc. All three of those outfits look like something I’d wear!

Haha, just from reading about you via your blog, I would totally have put you in any of these outfits. 🙂 We’d be twinners in real life!

Still trying to figure out what looks best on me! I definitely love the jewel tones too and seem to get more compliments when I wear them. And I’ve always been a fan of stripes!

I love me a good stripe, too! You can just never have too many stripes and polkadots, in my opinion! But polkadots are basically as busy as I get. I WISH I were capable of mixing patterns and wearing florals, but that just seems to complicated for me. 🙂
Wish we could go shopping for jewel tones together!

My style problem is that what I like and what I DO are very different. I like more dressy, put together outfits, but its rarely practical to wear anything other than jeans and some kind of t-shirt. I like that you’ve found a way to capture a style that’s both appealing AND practical.

This is such a fun idea, Erica! I feel like I’ve been in a bit of a fashion rut, but maybe I have finally nailed down my style? That’s a much better way of looking at things so I’m going with that 🙂 Those red pants are darling and I hope you get to try the look out soon. I dislike pants more than most sane people so my go-to outfit is probably a dress, wedge sandals, and cardigan. I’ll add some fun eclectic accessories to top things off–ladylike and ready for anything 🙂

My husband just gave my a wonderful birthday gift of cash to go out on a little shopping spree. I’m totally lost as to what I even like, look good in or is appropriate for me. Maybe some pinterest shopping around for style can help me see what I like before heading out. I envy that you know what you like and what you look best in…and I have always thought you were amazingly put together and stylish (even in college) 🙂

The royal blue blouse is so beautiful! Would definitely look great on someone with blonde hair and blue eyes — like you!! I think it’s really hard to nail down a personal style in your early twenties, and now that I think I have a good idea of what works for me I’m pretty much in sweats all the time (not because it’s what looks best, but because it’s convenient). I know I look best in earth tones, and I steer clear of yellow too with my hair color — it clashes, and I don’t often wear red because it brings out the ruddiness of my Irish skin.

Me too, Colleen! Black exercise pants (basically sweats) are my staple right now! I go through phases of dressing better or worse depending on how busy I am, and ever since I had Quinn, I’ve been BUSY! haha. I could see how you’d look great in warm earth tones!

In real life, my “style” consists of graphic tee and jeans every. single. day. It drives me nuts but I know that there isn’t room in the budget for a complete overhaul. Not to mention, even if there were, I wouldn’t really know where to start. Having said that, I feel like I’m getting there. Right now, I’m drawn to simple looks that are made up of mostly neutral pieces. I absolutely LOVE jewel tones and because I am also a fair-skinned, hazel-eyed girl, I think they work on me. And, yes, pale yellow is a no-no!
