When we first got married, we read a book about the five needs of a man and a woman. I don’t have the book to refer to now, but over the last seven years, Ryan and I have made a lot of jokes about three of the male needs—an attractive spouse, sexual fulfillment, and recreational companionship. They’re especially funny compared to the lovey-dovey needs the authors attributed to women. At first glance, those three needs makes men seem a bit superficial!
But when we had our first two boys, I was secretly elated that they could one help me out with the role of recreational companion for their dad. Looks like that day is coming sooner than I expected . . .
We found a gem of a place only miles from our house, right next to the Bay. It’s called “Shells,” and it’s full of perfectly sculpted hills for some adventure riding. Our two- and four-year-old boys mastered some impressive bumps, while I watched the sun set and thought about what the next dozen years will look like.
I have a feeling these boys are going to make much better mountain biking companions for their dad than I ever have! And I’ll be waiting on the blanket with the picnic basket, a camera, and a paper and pen! (Until they go off to college, that is. Then maybe I’ll have to pick up the sport to keep their dad company. 🙂
Have a lovely week!

That looks like so much fun! How fun to have boys who can do that with their dad. Luckily, I don’t feel like Chad expects me to be a “recreational companion” (haha) because that is just not my kind of thing.
This makes me even more excited for you to have a girl of your own (and then send the boys off with their dad!)!

Thanks, Rach! Yeah, I can’t really see you full-on pheasant hunting! 🙂 Love you!

I’m laughing… an attractive spouse?!? What? Am I not still fabulous in my yoga pants and ponytail? 🙂 My husband and I had a few fun conversations when we read about the “five needs” as well. He keeps threatening to take me hunting with him. I told him I’d spoil it with my fruity-smelling lotions and loud magazine page-turning, ha ha. And now, our oldest daughter can’t wait to go hunting with Dad. Maybe she’ll be the one to inspire me to try a quiet hour in the woods!

Amen to that! My magazine page turning gets pretty loud too. Do they make a Real Simple Wilderness Edition? It might make more suitable reading material for your first hunting experience. 🙂

Also, I just realized I am wearing yoga pants and a ponytail this very minute! Still fabulous, though, right?!

My husband and I have been married a little over 5 years now and we just now realized that we have a few thing in common: we both like to go to thrift stores/flea markets {yes, he said he likes to do this… I was like, “why did it take 5 years for you to tell me?” LOL}, and we both want to get into photography a bit more. Both are things that I supposed could be considered recreational… I mean, I’m a woman and I consider shopping to be a sport. 😉

Those boys are impressive on their bikes! And I have never seen that place before, but it looks like all had a great time!
