The other day my two-year-old, Chase, accidentally locked his older brother and I in their bedroom. We have the lock turned around so they can’t lock us out; I hadn’t thought twice about getting locked in.
What makes it worse is that we have a child safety knob on that door, so Chase couldn’t turn the handle to release the lock. He was standing on the other side of the door happily exclaiming, “I got it!” every two seconds, even though he most definitely did not have it.
Visions of Trenton and I locked in there for hours while poor little Chase wandered the house getting into who-knows-what flashed before my eyes. I had no idea when Ryan would be getting home (it’s often late), and just my luck, my cell phone was in the other room.
After about fifteen minutes I spotted a neighbor we barely know talking to someone in the parking lot (“x” marks the spot in the photo above!), so even though it was a long shot, I waved my arms and hoped she’d notice. She did! She had to come all the way into my patio, through the back door, and through my house just to rescue us.
Motherhood at its finest!
Who gets locked in a bedroom in their own house?? Does this kind of stuff happen to anyone else?
Ashley
At least your back door was open!!! :0)
Tate has locked himself into bedrooms and bathrooms before. We finally bought knobs from home depot that are easy to unlock from the other side

Right? I’d been unloading the car, so the patio door was unlocked – thank goodness!!

This is hilarious! I love Chase saying, “I got it!” Isaac and I were laughing about that.
One time I left Olivia inside the house while I took the trash out (she was 18ish months) and when I came back, she had locked me out! I pounded on the door and shouted her name for what felt like forever- it was probably only five minutes- before she came near shouting, “HI!” at the door. She finally decided to turn the little switch on the door that unlocked it. But, man, those five minutes killed me!

One time all the kids I was babysitting and I got locked into a bedroom on the second floor. Some of them were freaking out a bit and I was a little unsure how it was going to turn out, but luckily I found a bobby pin that I was able to use to take the doorknob off. At least all of the kids were locked in with me (the knob was broken and you weren’t supposed to close the door all the way) so we probably would have been okay if we had been stuck. Not too long ago our dog locked herself in the bathroom, and I had to take the doorknob off to get her out. I am glad that you guys got out fairly easily, and that Chase didn’t cause too much trouble while he was alone.

When I was little, I once locked my mom out of the house! She was in the backyard doing something, and I went over and turned the lock on the patio door. She ended up playing with me through the glass door for 15 minutes until my dad could get home and let her back in.

What a story. I can’t believe your neighbor saw you! I don’t even want to contemplate the same thing happening here – L has a penchant for getting into trouble!
Had to laugh at Chase’s “I got it!” – I just knew L got that phrase from him or T!!

Nope, but my kids have locked US out of bedrooms more than once. Once when my first was little, but luckily the room had a sliding door to the backyard AND the blinds were open, so my husband did lots of sign-language/demos on how to open the door. More hair-raising was my baby girl locking herself in our bedroom. There was no way in, and we couldn’t get her to open it. But my husband was home, he grabbed the tool box, and started taking the doorknob off. Then we enlisted our older child to drive cars under the door to get our little girl away from the door long enough that we could completely unscrew the door knob without it falling on her head. Still, the door knob missed her head by inches. I’ve also had my son lock me out of the car (with him the only one inside) by cleverly giving him my keys (with remote) to play with while putting on his car seat. Now I always leave at least one door open until I’m in the car with my kids.
Hooray for your neighbor. Motherhood is super fun.

Funny and frightening at the same time! We once had a babysitter lock herself and the baby in the baby’s room while big sister stood outside crying and trying to remember my cell phone number. Actually, she wasn’t locked in – the door sticks and we didn’t think to warn her, since we never shut that door (on purpose). Imagine the panic!
