Our family found the perfect u-pick orchard last weekend. It was unmanned, with bags for the taking and a box to drop your money in afterward. It had a dozen rows of labeled apple varieties. It was tucked down a twisty road only miles from the coast. But best of all, it was silent.
I noticed it the second we stepped out of the car. The silence. Not even a bird chirped. Naturally, it was only moments before my little boys’ sweet, excited voices filled the air, but for that one moment, I relished the quiet.
It made me wonder if I need more silence in my life—and how to get it. When you’re a young mother, silence is not something you come by easily. You need to look for it. I need to look for it.
But in the last few days, I’ve found it. I found it when I snuck into my boys’ room at night and listened to nothing but the sound of them breathing. I found it in the shower while the boys watched Cat in the Hat in the other room. I found it when I rolled over in my sleep at 4am and breathed a quiet thank you to my God for giving me this family.
I hope you’ll find some quiet this week, too.
(Maybe just not on Halloween. 🙂

You guys live in an awesome place that you can do fun things like this. Thanks for the reminder to find more quiet to reflect!

Quiet’s the best! I go out for “mommy walks” down by the creek and around the barn after dinner and it just kind of lets me think for a moment and hit the reset button. If I don’t do it, there’s definitely a difference in the rest of my evening.

You are so lucky to live near a creek and a barn! 🙂 I can imagine what a difference an after-dinner walk would make for me, too.

I have a hard time with silence. I seem to avoid it. I wonder why. Hmmm. Love your outfit in the first pic.
