Have you ever noticed how Saturday mornings can either be pure torture or pure heaven? They’re polar, those Saturday mornings.
Of course, I know what it really boils down to is my attitude.
If I stayed up too late, the kids seem to get up extra early and are perilously hungry (and plenty vocal about it!) by 7am. If I’m rested and expecting an early wakeup time, they seem to sleep in a bit and are totally game for a leisurely breakfast.
I live for those Saturdays.
To help you slow down and savor a Saturday morning, here are a few simple ways to make family breakfast a little extra special!
5 Ways to Make a Family Breakfast a Little Extra Special
-
Sprinkle liberally. It’s the littlest thing, but sprinkles just make kids happy. And breakfast foods are surprisingly well suited for them. 🙂 Think pancakes and waffles, overnight yogurt oats, even oatmeal with a dash of whipped cream. Hand your kids a bottle of sprinkles before 8am and watch their faces light up!
In our case, we (liberally!) sprinkled Pillsbury™ Grands! Cinnamon Rolls. They were so pretty, easy, and quickly consumed.

Go fancy. Why let dinner have all the fun, right? Pull out the china you never remember to use, line the table with candles, go wild and use cloth napkins!
-
Incorporate kids’ art. Let the kids make quick & easy place cards, and let them decide who’s sitting where. Mine love to be the boss of Mom and Dad when they get to tell us where to sit. 🙂
-
Re-live family memories (even as you’re making new ones). A family meal is a great time to reminisce and further solidify your family identify. I’ve mentioned it before, but I sometimes come to the table with a funny or memorable photo on my phone and just let the kids re-tell us the story of that moment. It’s the easiest conversation prompt I know of!
-
Stick love notes under their plates. Cut out a few hearts, jot down something you appreciate about each child or an act of kindness you saw them perform recently, and stick it under their plates for them to discover when they’re clearing the table.
Whether you’re celebrating a birthday or special occasion or just trying to bring a little more love and leisure into a regular ol’ weekend breakfast, I hope these ideas help get you there!
