But seriously, did you know?? There’s a decent chance I am the last person to know (this happens to me sometimes), but I had no idea. That is, until a couple of years ago a friend brought a big bowl of freshly popped popcorn to the park, saying all she did was cook it on her stove with a couple of tablespoons of coconut oil.
I always figured I needed to pick up an air popper (but who wants an extra appliance to store?) to get fresh popcorn, especially if you don’t want the additives that come in the microwave kind.
I went home and tried it with a heavy-bottomed pot, and we’ve been making it ever since.
Just the other day I put a big bowl of it out on a blanket on our grass. Within seconds there were five boys and one little lady (Miss Quinn) shoveling it into their mouths. Aaaand a few minutes later I was upstairs popping another batch. 🙂 #boyslikepopcorn
Ready for the super fancy instructions?
3-Step Stovetop Popcorn
3 tablespoons coconut (or canola) oil
1/3 cup popcorn kernels
kosher salt to taste
-
Select the heaviest-bottomed pot you have. Over medium-high heat, melt the coconut oil. (If using canola oil, there’s no need.) Add the popcorn kernels, and cover the pot with the lid.
-
Wait for kernels to start popping. Shake the pot right on the burner, alternating between shaking and keeping it still. (I do 1-2-3 shakes followed by 1-2-3 still, but you can find your own rhythm.) 🙂
-
When there are a couple of seconds between kernels popping, remove from heat. Let sit with with lid on for a couple of minutes till there’s no more popping. Sprinkle with kosher salt and serve warm!
Also, my kids and I tend to like variety, so here are a few fun additions you might want to try:
-
M&Ms
-
Dark chocolate discs (Just be sure to serve with napkins!)
-
Almonds and dried cranberries (Trader Joe’s organic dried cranberries are super plump and sweet. Love them!)
-
1-2 Tablespoons of melted butter, plus a dusting of cinnamon sugar and sea salt
Any popcorn lovers out there?

Yum! Popcorn is a favorite snack around here. Lately we’ve been topping ours with the Herbed Garlic-Parmesan seasoning from the Our Best Bites blog. Trouble is caramel corn – cannot stop eating that until it is all gone 🙂

For sure, Marcella! Dangerous stuff!

After watching my seven-year-old inhale JUNK all spring break (ten days with grandma flanked with a sixteen-hour road trip on either side, and THEN EASTER??), this sounds like a great idea! Thanks!

I love popcorn! I’ve been super paranoid about choking hazards with my babies so I don’t eat it as much as I’d like to. I’ve been wanting to try this method for a while (I always think if snoopy can do it for Charlie brown’s thanksgiving then maybe I can too). You’ve inspired me to try this method for our next movie night. Wish me luck!

Understandable, Jules! And your “if snoopy can, I can” comment made me laugh. 🙂

haven’t made popcorn like this in years – thanks for the reminder to start up again 🙂

Sure thing, lady! Happy popping! 😉
